Unfolding your voice

Did you know that your voice is a snowflake?

Every single voice is unique due to your genetics, the dimensions of your face, and the shape of your body. No one on Earth has a voice like yours.

If you’ve heard me speak about sound healing, you may know that, despite my love for all of my beautiful instruments, I find that the most healing instrument is the voice. There is something so primal and magical about our voices and scientists have found that babies in the womb can recognize the sound of their mother speaking.

“Did you know that the human voice is the only pure instrument? That it has notes no other instrument has? It’s like playing between the keys of a piano.”

– Nina Simone

When I began learning Afro-Caribbean music and dance nearly 30 years ago, part of my passion for this artform was its profound connection to African traditional spirituality. Singing for the orishas, deified forces of nature in the Yoruba tradition, became my deepest form of prayer and meditation.

I have noticed that my voice has changed along my spiritual journey—and I know this experience is not unique. As I’ve come to embrace more energetic alignment, my voice has naturally shifted into a resonance that promotes balance and equilibrium. A positive feedback loop is created generating a ripple effect of healing.

And the same is true for you.

Your voice has the power to heal.

How do you intend to use your instrument today?
